Why did you choose to do an internship at Maxwell Locke & Ritter?
I really enjoyed the people from ML&R. Throughout my interview process, I was introduced to engaging people who made me want to join such a collaborative and hard-working team. Once I began interning with ML&R, all my initial thoughts were proven right. The team is supportive and wants to see everyone excel.
What types of projects have you worked on and what have you learned during your internship?
I have worked on a variety of tax projects: individuals, trusts, partnerships, s-corps and corporations. I am extremely thankful for the opportunity to see a variety of different tax returns and the tax team’s trust that I can complete the initial preparation.
What kinds of feedback have you received throughout your internship?
I have received on the job feedback on the returns I have completed as well as feedback about my future career in tax. Everyone is always willing to help and share their insight.
What have you enjoyed most about Maxwell Locke & Ritter?
One aspect I enjoy is that everyone ensures the interns learn from the returns we prepare. The firm has provided hands-on training and gives us all the tools/resources we need to be successful in the internship. I am thankful for the fact that I am constantly learning as I prepare returns.
What has been most valuable about your internship?
Maxwell Locke & Ritter cares about their people! This is evident by all the hard work the firm is putting in to make sure everyone can work from home; they’ve been very accommodating to associates. During these challenging times, I appreciate the flexibility offered by the firm.
Are there any ML&R members who have had a special impact on your internship?
I met Sandra Ou during the interview process and she made me want to work with ML&R. She is friendly and cares about the success of the intern class.
Doris Ayala, my mentor, has been attentive in my learning. She’s shared the journey of her career and it’s inspiring to see someone excel while maintaining work-life balance.
Kristine Megna-Gaviria is always happy to answer questions and help me solve issues that arose while preparing returns.
What do you think future interns can do to prepare for their internship?
Be willing to ask for help when learning. I always find this to be difficult because everyone is busy during tax season. However, ML&R emphasizes a collaborative environment as shown by the willingness of associates to offer help when needed.
What are your long-term career goals and what’s up next for you?
Before interning with ML&R, I was still considering other fields in public accounting. However, going through this experience has affirmed my interest in tax. My plan is to pursue a career in tax accounting after my graduation in May 2021.
