Why did you choose to do an internship at Maxwell Locke & Ritter?
Through my research of Maxwell Locke & Ritter before my interview, I found that ML&R has a good reputation in Austin. ML&R serves many organizations in the community and their commitment to their core values was evident during the interview process. This commitment to serving others is why I chose to do an internship at ML&R.
What types of projects have you worked on and what have you learned during your internship?
I have been working on individual and trust returns for most of my internship. I learn new things every day: technical tax knowledge, Excel and Adobe, and communication skills.
What kinds of feedback have you received throughout your internship?
The firm’s tax associates provide very detailed review notes on tax returns which has allowed me to improve during of my internship. Thanks to the teams’ patience and the opportunity to correct errors, I have learned a lot.
What have you enjoyed most about Maxwell Locke & Ritter?
Before the impact of COVID-19 led us to our current remote work environments, I especially enjoyed working with the rest of the tax intern crew. We worked hard, asked questions, heard every sigh or laugh, ate overtime meals, and had in-person supervision.
What has been most valuable about your internship?
In these unprecedented times, ML&R is living up to its core values, operating as one firm, continuing to serve clients, and supporting one another and team members’ families. I am so grateful that I am with ML&R during this crisis.
Are there any ML&R members who have had a special impact on your internship?
On the last day that I worked in the office, Steve Knebel shared his experience of prior crises over the course of his career and challenged me to observe how ML&R responds as a firm. By not just focusing on tax returns, it’s been an excellent learning opportunity in my career.
What do you think future interns can do to prepare for their internship?
Be ready to learn and don’t hesitate to ask questions.
What are your long-term career goals and what’s up next for you?
I’ll finish my master’s degree in a year and hopefully find a full-time job after graduation. I can see myself being an accountant for a long time and plan to experience both tax and audit before devoting to one track. After gaining enough experience, I want to come back to ML&R.
