August Justin (A.J.) Zimmerhanzel – B.B.A./Honors Program, 1989, Partner
A.J. Zimmerhanzel attended The University of Texas at Austin where he received his BBA (1989) in the Honors Program. In 1989, he began his public accounting career in the Houston office of Touche Ross. Later in 1989, he was moved to the Austin Office of Deloitte Haskins & Sells, which eventually became Maxwell Locke & Ritter LLP.
A.J. leads our audit practice and has concentrated in auditing and consulting services, especially for closely-held businesses. He has served many companies reaching the transitional level in accounting and financial reporting issues. He tries to establish a client relationship based on open communication and trust so that clients feel comfortable calling with any business question — even if it is not directly related to an accounting or financial issue. “This helps me stay in touch and informed about clients’ overall operations,” he says, “so that it’s not a once a year in and out communication cycle.” A.J. also serves as a teacher and mentor for interns and new members of the firm, encouraging them to educate themselves in areas of interest that may provide new firm service areas.
If A.J. had to come up with a metaphor for life, he would use golf. “It teaches you focus and concentration and facilitates planning and execution.” He says that he enjoys playing with everyone — clients, co-workers, and friends — since it gives him an opportunity to improve relationships outside of the regular “work relationship.”
“The concentration on people and the empowerment of all firm personnel has given Maxwell Locke & Ritter LLP its competitive edge,” according to A.J. He believes that what used to be considered “down time” has now been converted to planning time where the firm’s personnel are clearing the path and establishing the goals for the future. “This enhances client service as our people have the opportunity to help our clients improve their overall financial and business operations.”
